At Borderview Sporthorses, we believe that breeding exceptional horses is an art form underpinned by knowledge and clear intention. The sport horse world has evolved dramatically, and the tools available to the modern breeder — in terms of pedigree data, performance records, and genetic science — are more powerful than at any point in history.
Our mission is to harness these tools with precision and purpose, to produce warmbloods of genuine quality: horses that are correct in conformation, exceptional in movement, and possess the intelligence, willingness, and athletic ability that define the truly great ones.
Often the best choice for a mare may not be a popular or commercial stallion, and that is what sets us apart. We believe in our mares and our choices — the quality of the foals speaks for itself.
Modern sport horse breeding is no longer simply about pairing two good horses and hoping for the best. This method is overall hugely ineffective and the chance of breeding greatness is slim. The most successful breeding and sport horses have pedigrees that reflect their greatness. Using sophisticated pedigree theory, we can increase our chances of producing a purpose bred sport horse capable of competing at the highest levels.
We have a clear goal in place for each individual mating. This gives each horse a purpose and direction, and allows us not only to produce a better individual, but also to place that individual in the most suitable home possible.
For all matings, our goal is to produce a healthy, sound horse with a kind and willing temperament and an excellent work ethic.
Of course, we don’t rely on what’s written on the pedigree papers alone. Our use of advanced pedigree theory is simply what sets us apart — it works alongside the many other quality markers we hold every horse to.
It begins with our mares. We breed only from top-quality mares, the majority of whom have been radiographed, and all of whom have been assessed and accepted into the Hanoverian or Rhineland studbooks. Most of our younger mares have also been started under saddle, so we know first-hand the rideability and temperament behind the breeding. Conformation, temperament, and work ethic are all heavily selected for.
That same care continues from the moment a foal is born. Our foals are handled from day one and receive regular farrier attention — at least every six weeks from birth, or more often as needed — giving them the very best possible start.
We are a proud breeder member of the Hanoverian Horse Society of Australia (HHSA), and every one of our horses is registered with them. We chose the HHSA because it is a direct daughter society of the Hanoverian Verband in Germany — upholding the same rigorous, internationally recognised standard as the Verband itself.
Every mare and foal is DNA typed and issued with a passport that guarantees age, breeding, and identification, and is accepted by the WFBSH (World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses). The HHSA’s Annual Tour also gives us the valuable opportunity to have our horses assessed by internationally trained judges. This feedback helps confirm we are breeding to the highest standard.
